The Moreno-Trump Bromance

Bernie Moreno is Ohio’s “senior” senator in Washington, despite having served a little over 1.5 years. He took JD Vance’s place, and this senior status is really going to his head. One might think at this early stage of his term, he would allow veteran senators in the Capitol to take the lead. But no, by golly, Senator Moreno alone has enough cahunas for a whole lunchroom of legislators.

Whenever Trump does or says something especially outrageous, just wait about 23 minutes, and there will be a news story about Bernie backing Trump. Like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he’ll do his utmost to make Trump’s dreams come true. The latest eye-popping example happened this week, as Trump promised every adult citizen a $5000 check if the Republicans hold the Senate and House after the November elections. Wait 23 minutes….. and the adoring Senator Moreno says he’s going to introduce a bill to write these promised checks into law.

When Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario Lake America, you might think Moreno, residing in northern Ohio, would think differently. Ohio and Canada are symbiotic, relying on one another heavily to manufacture cars. Moreno agreed with the renaming strategy.

When Canadian wildfire smoke descended on the Midwest and Northeast this July, Moreno was pissed. Disregarding the facts of climate change, increasing frequency of high intensity lightning storms, and the vastness of Canadian forests, Moreno placed the blame firmly on Canada’s poor forest management skills. He took this view out of the Trump playbook, when Trump blamed California’s fires on a buildup of vegetation. Bernie seems ignorant of the size of the Canadian boreal forest, which is about 1.5 times as large as our lower 48 states. And it’s remote as hell. If he thinks a bunch of humans are going to be able to monitor and clean up that much forest, he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

So, 23 minutes after Trump complained that Canadian wildfires were polluting our air because of poor forest management, Moreno wrote up a bill to sanction Canada and its officials. He went from calling Trump a lunatic and a maniac in 2016 to pretty much carrying on a bromance with him ten years later. The next time our Prez says something particularly unhinged, just wait 23 minutes….
